Going Dark is an international workshop, created by Traverso-Vighy and Light Collective in the heart of Tuscany.
Join us for the second Going Dark, in October 2024 for a unique workshop that specifically considers lighting design for heritage spaces that also preserve darkness and the view of the night sky.
We are honored to be invited by the local administration to host Going Dark again in October 2024. This year we are also extending the programme in line with feedback from last year and looking to create an even more collaborative and outcome focused event.
We aim to promote responsible lighting practices and discuss the use of appropriate lighting equipment that reduces unnecessary external illumination and minimise the negative impact of light on human health and the natural environment in line with the ROLAN Manifesto.
It is a chance to be part of an intimate and exclusive event that aims to promote the town, the co-existence of light, architecture and darkness proving it is possible to celebrate architectural heritage whilst also considering and therefore protecting the night sky.
The event takes place over 3 days in the Benedictine monastery, founded at the start of the year 1000 and in the village that developed around the monastery. Abbadia a Isola stands on the edge of the Via Francigena, once a busy medieval highway for pilgrims and merchants.

One of the main aims of the second edition of Going Dark is to create and facilitate a collaborative working relationship between the professional lighting design community and the manufacturers of high quality lighting equipment around the principles of Responsible Outdoor Lighting At Night (ROLAN).
The installations that are created will be documented in a way that they can be shared with the wider community and other interested parties. This will serve to create some best practice examples to show what is possible when the lighting community comes together in collaboration.
This is your chance to step away from the office, to spend time in a dark and heritage environment and to help us create a design guide for best lighting practice for this application.
